Square Enix tried, and mostly failed with their first Marvel game, which was centered on The Avengers. The game was criticized for the lacking of depth for the microtransactions that it used, and for its an open world that was shallow – and this, despite an huge roster. However, I’m not here to criticize the previous game. I’m here to attack this one! or at the very least, I would have been, if it not a significant improvement over the previous.

With open-world games becoming an market standard following Skyrim’s (still) huge popularity, there aren’t many games being developed to depart from this model. Most of them are filled with pointless “fetch and return” side quests and over-stuffed filler or simply wide expanses of world-filling bumf.

In this case, we’re pretty much in the middle in the Guardians. In the least, we’re with Peter Quill/Star-Lord, since even though he’s not the main character that he’s the only able to control character in the series. This isn’t to claim that other heroes aren’t there but they’re not easily controlled. You can simply tell them how to do in battle (Groot is a rooted character, Rocket fires weaponry) while you move around shooting at objects like Quill.

Although it is based on the film characters for comfort for many players The game itself unfolds more like the comic book stories that one would be assumed to. We’re given to the prologue, which is set in the context of an altered version of the original story for Star-Lord before being brought into the present through the Guardians.

One reason that I’m reluctant to not divulge any more details is the fact that even though the game’s narrative is linear the small number of choices in dialogue as well as larger game moment options actually permit for unexpected variety in the narrative.

In the absence of switching between characters on a regular basis, the battle DOES become fairly similar as you advance. The enemies don’t become more difficult despite their amazing design changes, they get a normal damage sponge that consumes longer to complete but not requiring much effort.

But, by focusing more on Quill as a character, his emotions, and the story, you’ll get an experience that’s funny and heartfelt, as well as more profound than you’d imagine for its 18 hours (average) time of play.

There’s a plethora of dialogue within this game. There is both dialogue written by you, the player, as well as general conversation between your team. You are able to effectively interrupt for an interlude in the middle of a fight – it could slow the pace little, but if watched the film before that the boss at the end was essentially a dance-off…

There’s also a significant mix of 80’s songs sprinkled throughout the game, with some that appear at the most hilariously inappropriate times.

Like you’d expect when you’ve played previous previously in Square Enix games prior to this (Final Fantasy or Star Ocean), the level design and the environment is stunning and precise The story of the company here shines through in the world of otherworldly settings that you’ll explore.

Despite the possibly short run-time the impact of your choice (after selecting a few options I then googled a “What If’ scenario to them to determine what could have occurred) is far more than enough to offer an additional or even a third replay to this game.

If you weren’t a fan of The Avengers game but still would like the Marvel game you’ve always wanted and you can’t afford to miss it, get a copy that’s a huge improvement over the previous.

It’s worth noting that the game runs best when played on PS5 and the most up-to-date Xbox optimized for these and compatible TVs However, the PS4 version is well even if you’ve failed to obtain one yet.
